Maliki Concedes the Premiership to Allawi

It looks like Allawi is about to get what he deserves as the winner in the March 7 election:

Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki said that he is not opposed to having al-Iraqiya bloc of Ayad Allawi form the new government, if the matter was conducted in accordance with constitutional guidelines.

Maliki added at a joint press conference with Lebanese counterpart Saad Hariri that he believes in the peaceful and constitutional turnover of power. Maliki explained that “when someone comes and shows that he can secure [parliamentary] majority in accordance with the constitution, we will all go with him.”
Now all that is needed to finalize the deal is to get the Kurds to sign in on it. The Kurdish top leaders are having their own meetings today to decide their final position. Yesterday they spoke with Allawi and with VP Biden. If the Kurdish leaders agree to relinquish the Presidency and accept alternatives like the Speaker of Parliament position, things can progress really fast.

One thing I've learned from watching the Iraqis and their deadlines; they always come right down to the wire. I hope the Kurds come on board.

I think you're jumping the gun. State of Law today and yesterday have continued to say that Maliki is their only candidate for prime minister.

Just reporting the news here, JWing. Maliki did in fact say the things in the report I linked.
Plus, when you hear SoL says that, keep in mind the context, that they are talking to the INA, who want them to present substitutes. SoL-Iraqiya talks are different.

in the end, though, will it really matter? Of course not. It's a Kabuki play. As Hugh Fitzgerald notes:

If one were to add up the amounts that have been received from the sale of oil and natural gas, that alone would make the Muslim Arabs, or a great many of them, the beneficiaries of the largest transfer of wealth in human history - more than thirteen trillion dollars since 1973 alone (and hundreds of billions before that). Yet not a single oil-or-gas-rich Arab state has created a modern economy; not one can afford to exist without vast armies of foreign workers, with the most important ones being non-Muslims, who in some of the smaller sheiklets outnumber the natives by 2-1 or 3-1 or 4-1. No Arab Muslim land can do without access to Western medical care and Western education and Western technology...

And, LOL, we have Omar and the blog here as a prima facie example of what Fitzgerald said.

Western education and western technology on display for all to see.

One of the questions, when dealing with the Islamic world, everyone who are seeking the truth should ask is:

Out of the 57 Muslim majority countries, name one that isn't dysfunctional from either a political, religious or sociological function?

And that's a tough question - the only one I could come up with was Kazakhstan, and they are backsliding on political freedom and religious issues. And they also have a large non Muslim population (about 43 percent), which helps to mitigate against the application of non secular Islam.

Why are Islamic countries so screwed up?

LOL, it's the white crescent tattoed elephant in the room.

I always saw Allawi as the sort of strong, nationalistic leader that could unite and focus Iraq on rebuilding and rebirth.

Unfortunately he has a cloud of corruption that follows him. The first step for success is to provide security. Done, mostly. The second step is to reduce corruption. This challenge will define Allawi. The third step is to rebuild the country. The third step happens automatically. Once people are protected and free to grow, they will. The growth will occur exponentially - meaning stunningly. Exponential growth curves start off maddeningly slow however. Consider the series - 5,6,8,8,10. This could be an Iraqi's daily salary. It takes forever to grow, but in 25 years it would be 160/day, higher than in the USA.

Once growth starts, Iraq should never, ever give out free oil money. People will grow best as long as they are free. The oil money should be used to finance foreign and domestic investment. In 25 years, there will be 3 superpowers.

Of course none of this will happen, however all great things start with a vision. Hopefully Allawi will provide that vision.

What also worries me is the malign influence of those two enthusiastic incompetent appeasers, Obama and Biden.  Aided and abetted by the stealth progressive, Clinton.

I fear an Iran-US Axis of Evil.

What's up with this Echo commenting system?  It assures me it has registered the updates and changes to my profile (e.g., avatar) but none of them actually work onsite. And I am not happy with it defaulting to logging in with my Twitter ID, which is very bare-bones and inactive.  Wassup?

Arg. Now the avatar is there, but the nickname is wrong. And the system no longer allows Preview (or Edit).

No, they're not. No matter what parties are talking the discussion is always the same, who will be the next prime minister? When State of Law and the National Alliance talk its whether Maliki will be PM or someone else. When State of Law and Iraqiya talk its whether Maliki or Allawi will be PM. The presidency, speaker, ministries, etc. are all secondary.
